Xin chao ... John posts from Vietnam 20 June

... or HELLO as we say here in Vietnam. It's pronounced sin jow, if you want to impress the waiter in you local VN restaurant.

Moved along the coast of Cambodia to the resort of Sihanoukville, a really depressing place with second-rate beaches and bars full of westeners drinking lager and stuffing hamburgers and chips down their throats and wearing 'Paddy's Bar' T-shirts.

Moved on pretty quick to the delightful town of Kampot....main export is potholes, and they have several years stock. They also grow red, white and black peppers here, and cardomen. Situated on a creek a little inland from the coast it is clean and incredibly cheap...hard to spend $10 a day, including decent hotel. Many expats live here, the locals call them Kompats! Excellent food here, very similar to VN. Took a trip up to the French-built mountain resort of Bokor, now totally derelict. Used as a prison and execution centre by the Khmer Rouge, so a bit spooky.

Main problems in Cambodia are dogs and money. Every house has a dog called ck'a....which means 'dog', which shows the locals have a lot of imagination. The dogs are small and yappy and go for your ankles, so best to walk around with a handful of rocks. Money can be challenging as they use the local rials in tandem with US$ and Thai baht. It's very easy, 30B=$1=4000R. You often buy in one currency and get change in a mixture of all three. Calculators a must in every shop and stall.

Crossed the border into VN with the usual hassle for money from the border guard....told them I hadn't got any as I'd just paid $60 for a visa. No train from here to Saigon, so three buses, one ferry and a taxi took 12 hours winding through the Mekong delta, lots of rivers and canals and a dreadful road....I think they are importing potholes from Kampot.

Much rain in Saigon, and I've seen the sights before. Took day train on cheap hard seat here to Nah Trang. Good journey, lots of 'Hello ambushes' by small kids wanting to learn English. Weather better here, no rain and a good sea-breeze to take the edge of the heat.

Tonight have a sleeper berth to Da Nang further up the coast, $30 for the 10 hour trip. From DN I can take a short bus ride to the beautiful fishing village of Hoi An. Will stay here a couple of days, and hope to get to the infamous village of My Lei, where there is a memorial and a small museum.

Tonight I am having stir-fried eel in chilli and lemongrass ...the food here is brilliant, the stomach is getting a real hammering.

VN is also very cheap, but its 20,000 Dong to the dollar and all the paper money has loads of noughts, all very confusing. Tend to get 2 million Dong at a time from ATM, so feel quite rich for a few days.

Salamat logi ... John posts from Malaysia 11 Jun

.........or good morning as we say in Malaysia. Trusting everybody is keeping well and not as hot and sticky as myself.

Caught a bus yesterday from Bangkok to the border with Cambodia and crossed over the border with much stamping of passports and visas and much filling in of forms and demands for money, the latter being politely ignored. Presently in the quaintly named border town of Kreng Koh Kong, a really run down place of corrugated iron shacks, broken pavements and dirt roads that turn into quagmires in the torrential rains, for it is now the rainy season. Reminds me of a cross between India (for the filth) and Burma (for the poverty). The locals are initially very reserved, but open up once you attempt to communicate....but this is difficult as my Khymer is not yet up to speed and very little English is spoken.

Missed the bus out of here this morning so have spent an interesting day people watching...mainly to see how many people can ride on one scooter. Visited the large covered market...the meat section could turn one vegetarian in seconds, huge slabs of fly-infested meat on wooden slabs, with the vendors squatting bare-foot on the slabs. Huge hell's kitchen in centre of market, all cooking on open fires, so heat and smell overpowering.

However there are plus sides to Cambodia. It is incredibly cheap, I have a spotless room with hot shower for $8 a night. Had a meal and a large beer last night for $4.50.......had ""Duck burnt to the oven"", a half duck smashed to pieces with a large cleaver.

Definitely the best food in the world here, so good I eat 3 times a day. Had a brilliant fish curry at the bus station in Butterworth, Malaysia. Worst meal was a ghastly stir fry from the aptly named Yu Kee Chinese restaurant in Singapore. Here you pay for your meal and drinks before you consume... which back-fires on them when they try and overcharge you... just get up and walk out, then they can throw away the food!

Had a good flight over. Dived into an empty row of 3 seats immediately after take-off and slept most of the way. Then train from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore.... .what a ghastly place, a glass and concrete monstrosity, a monument to the worst of greed, consumerism and capitalism. Very little to see that is of any interest....should be renamed SingaBore!!! Amazingly expensive, paid S$150 for a second rate room, so took next bus back to KL. Singaboreans would make up a wonderful infantry division.....they wait ages for the pedestrian lights to turn green before they cross the road, even if there is no traffic about......just line them up in front of the enemy machine-guns and turn the light green and they will think it safe to advance.

From KL 8hr train to Butterworth and ferry across to Georgetown and a quick look around. Amazed to see in Malaysia a chain of hairdressers called Thomas & Guy.... Then very pleasant night sleeper train to Bangkok, met a nice Malaysian who was a fount of knowlege on medicinal plants...I now have a long list of natural cures for any ailment you care to name.

Next stop Sihanoukville, further along the coast. Supposed to have good restaurants for Khymer cuisine......fried spiders, snake and snail I expect. Then on to Saigon via the dreary capital Phnom Penh.

Need to collect my LAUNTRY from the Chinese washerwoman. Don't know how she will get it dry with this heat and humidity.
